The Educated Rabbit – November 12, 2009

Must-See Websites
by Sheri Fenley

This month I traveled to many different websites and blogs that had anything to do with cemeteries, headstones, etc.  There were so many fantastic and informative sites, I found it hard to choose just one to review.  So I didn't.

I am instead, presenting a handful of ones that stood out (in my mind) as being educational and interesting.  Enjoy!

Southern Graves – Last month, Stephanie Lincecum went on a quest to find out why stones are placed on graves by visitors in her post Rocks, Rocks, and More Rocks.

Stone Quarries and Beyond – The site has oodles of photographs, articles, and state-by-state lists of the types of stone native and quarried.  Basically everything one could want on monument stone history.

Lundgren Monuments – Glow-in-the-dark headstones?  You have to see these glass headstones.  Very classy.

StonePicsStonePics is the results of a unique project to photograph and index every cemetery, headstone, and monument in Newfoundland, Canada. The completion of this project makes Newfoundland proud to be the first state/province in North America to have a comprehensive database for finding cemeteries and headstones."

It is unbelievable how much time and effort went into this project.  Here you will find pages on how to repair headstones, Newfoundland burial traditions, the best way to photograph headstones, and a huge database of 1,700 cemeteries that they have surveyed.  But by far I thought the best page was about  a most unusual way to clean headstones.
