George and Edmond Fontaine

On the edge of Highland Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS sits this little guy. John Gary Brown, author of Soul in the Stone; Cemetery Art from America’s Heartland, calls him a strange child but I find him intriguing. He adorns the grave of George (1906-1906) and Edmond (1908-1908) Fontaine.

He is the work of Hance White, who operated the Pittsburg, Kansas Marble Works from 1892 until his death in 1926. He was a successful businessman, accomplished musician and folk artist. Hance White is buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. I visited Mt. Olive on the same trip but was not aware of this before researching him later. I’m hoping to visit his grave on my next trip through the area.

Digital Cemetery Walk
Cemetery walks offer an afternoon of discovery.
Every stone has a story. And they are waiting to be told.

Think I need to show you a cemetery walk in the UK. So sad when you see the children had no life I have come across a few and always spend a moment with them.
